How to Use the Magic 8 Ball Online

This online Magic 8 Ball works like the classic toy, with a few extras the toy cannot do.

Ask a yes or no question

Type your question in the box, or just think of it. Stuck for ideas? Press the question mark button for a suggestion.

Pick an answer style

Choose Classic, Funny, Yes / No or Custom. Each style changes the set of answers the ball can give.

Shake the ball

Press Shake the ball, tap the ball or hit Enter. On many Android phones you can also physically shake your phone. The ball rattles, then the answer floats up in the window with a chime.

Read and share your answer

The answer card shows a Leans yes, Unsure or Leans no label. Use Share to send the result to a friend, and open Recent answers to see your history.

Four Ways to Play

Classic answers

The traditional mix of 20 replies: 10 that lean yes, 5 that are unsure and 5 that lean no.

Funny answers

Twenty lighthearted replies, such as “Yes, and bring snacks” and “Ask me after coffee”, with the same yes, unsure and no balance.

Yes / No only

A plain yes or no with no maybes, for when you need a clear call.

Custom answers

Every Classic Magic 8 Ball Answer

Answers that lean yes

Answers that are unsure

Ask again later, Too soon to tell, Cannot say right now, Focus and ask again, and The answer is cloudy.

Answers that lean no

What Are the Odds of Getting a Yes?

In Custom mode, every answer you add has an equal chance. Each shake is independent, so asking again does not make a yes more or less likely. Our guide on whether online spinners are really random explains how this kind of randomness works.

How a Real Magic 8 Ball Works

Inside the toy is a white, 20-sided die floating in dark blue liquid. Each face carries one answer. When you turn the ball over, the die floats up and one face presses against the little window.

The idea dates back to 1946, when Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman invented the fortune-telling device. In 1950 a billiards company asked for a version shaped like a black 8 ball, and that look stuck. Our online Magic 8 Ball keeps the same 10 yes, 5 unsure and 5 no balance in Classic mode.

Fun Ways to Use a Magic 8 Ball

The ball is silly on purpose, which is exactly why people love it.

Party game

Pass a phone around and let each guest ask one question out loud. Switch to Funny answers for more laughs.

Classroom warm-up

Put the ball on the board in full screen and let students ask questions about the day ahead. It gets everyone talking within minutes.

Small, low-stakes choices

Stuck on whether to watch one more episode or order dessert? Let the ball make the call on choices that do not really matter.

Story and writing prompts

Writers can ask the ball questions about a character. A surprise answer often pushes a story in a new direction.

Good Questions to Ask the Magic 8 Ball

  • Will today be a good day?
  • Should I order pizza tonight?
  • Will my team win this weekend?
  • Should I start that new project now?
  • Is it a good day for a walk?
  • Should I watch one more episode?
  • Will I finish my to-do list today?
  • Should we play another round?

Questions with a clear yes or no answer work best. For open questions like “What should I eat?”, a spinner such as the food wheel is a better fit.

Magic 8 Ball vs Yes or No Wheel

The Magic 8 Ball gives you a range of replies, including some that tell you to ask again. If you want a plain answer with no maybes, the yes or no wheel gives you a clear yes or no.

For a strict 50/50 call between two options, use the coin flip or the pick a number 1 or 2 wheel. If you have a whole list of options, add them to the Wheel of Names and spin.
